Best Summer Hair Care Tips

Here are my best tips for healthy hair throughout the summer:

Mask! Mask! Mask! … the hair kind! Look for one containing moisture if you’re out in the salt water or sun a lot, and one for repair if you use heat tools or lighten/color your hair. It helps to replenish everything that’s getting taken out of the hair. Especially when the hair is thirsty and you can take advantage of all the time you spend having it up in a bun. This way when fall rolls around and it’s blow-dry time again, your hair will be healthier, shinier, and actually easier to style. It also helps reduce frizz and breakage now.  My favorite mask is Formula 18 Hair Mask.

Before going in the pool or ocean (salt water or chlorine) – always try to rinse your hair first and get it saturated with fresh water. This will help it be too full to absorb the salt and chlorine water.  Then coat with your favorite conditioner.

If your hair is lightened OR YOU WEAR HAIR EXTENSIONS: I recommend NOT letting it touch your sunscreen if your sunscreen isn’t a mineral sunscreen – it can cause hair to turn orange. The ingredients cited to be the biggest offender is: Avobenzone (Butyl Methoxydibenzoylmethane). This is used in sunscreen products to absorb the full spectrum of UVA rays.  For a full list of extension and blonde-safe sunscreens click here — > APPROVED SUNSCREENS.

Take advantage of the summer’s more laid-back vibes and let your hair dry naturally once or twice a week. It really makes a difference by the end of the summer . One blow dry might not make much of a difference, but I promise you 10-20 will. If the humidity is over 50% outside, there’s no sense fighting your natural texture blow drying and straightening anyway. Don’t even put in the time unless you have somewhere special to go and you can stay in the air conditioning the entire time. Anything outdoor = go with your natural texture.

Braids are the easiest way to live a lower maintenance life when it comes to summer styling. Braid your hair when it’s damp and rock the wavy mermaid look until you shampoo again. Summer is the perfect boho, beachywave time of year.

@SleepyTie is the best new invention! It preserves your blowout while you’re asleep, giving your hair extra volume at the same time. What?! I know! It can also save your blowout when you’re at the beach, in the shower under a cap, working out at the gym. Literally the uses are endless! Life changing. Don’t say I didn’t tell you. Dry shampoo – It’s probably in your arsenal of products already, but I recommend spraying roots right after a fresh blowout. Summer humidity can make even clean hair fall flat.

A translucent powder sunscreen is a great way to protect your scalp and absorb some oils.  A really great one is Tarte SEA Set & Protect Mineral Sunscreen Powder Broad Spectrum SPF 30.

Hats are always a good idea.  Not only for your hair, but your skin will thank you later on also.

I hope these tips help you to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy all summer long. Xo
