ROUND BRUSH REVIEW

Round Brush Review

When it comes to round brushes, there are so many to choose from, how do you know where to start?

As a stylist, I have a few different brushes for different jobs when styling different textures.  And they’re all kind of necessary.  Because I don’t style the same type of hair into the same styles all day, I need a range of brushes to do a bunch of different tasks.  Similar to a makeup artist, each brush has a different purpose.  Setting yourself up for success when styling definitely comes down to having the right tools.  Don’t get me wrong, skills help too, but if you handed me a hotel bathroom hair dryer and the brush you use at home, I’d probably get very similar results to what you would get.

Being skilled will get you to the finish line, but being skilled AND using the right tools will help you win the race!

When it comes to round brushes, they fall into one of two categories:  to smooth, or to add volume.  That’s it.  There’s no in between for round brushes.

They have one job only and it’s either

A.) TO SMOOTH

B.) TO ADD VOLUME

Periodttt.

Brushes I choose for smoothing tend to be boar bristle, have more bristles than other types of brushes, and have more tightly packed together bristles.  This allows the brush to grab each hair without any hairs slipping through the gaps, ensuring you’re pulling each hair with tension and getting them all really smooth, straight, and polished.  When your goal is a smooth result, you want to get the hair to lay as flat and one-dimensional as possible to get the most glass-like finish.

Brushes I choose for adding volume tend to be ceramic, lighter weight, perforated, have fewer bristles altogether, and have more space in between the bristles.  This allows the hair to dry faster and with less tension than a boar bristle brush.  When your goal is to create volume you want to get as much air in between the hairs as possible so you can expand everything and make it as 3-dimensional as you can.
