Sleeping with Wet Hair
If you are someone who washes their hair at night and frequently falls asleep without drying it keep reading.
Do you know how bad it is for you to go to bed with wet hair?
The hair is stretched to its max when it is wet. That’s why it feels longer in the shower, and that is why I never cut bangs while the hair is wet. That’s not where they’re going to live.
Any more stretching than that and the hair will break. So while it’s in it’s most fragile state, the last thing you want to do is have it roll around for hours on your cotton pillowcase. Those fibers are rough and will definitely tear the hair. Silk pillowcases cause much less friction and are so much more gentle on the hair and on your skin.
New baby hairs? Old breakage that never grows? New unexplained breakage? Really frizzy or knotty hair? Those can all be the after effects of sleeping with wet hair if you make a habit out of it.
If you have eczema or psoriasis, leaving moisture trapped in your hair overnight could cause you to have further irritation.
The hair and scalp need to dry completely between washings. If you have really thick hair and go to bed with it wet, and keep your hair tied back the whole day, and wake up and do it again, and your hair doesn’t dry in between for multiple days, it can actually get moldy.
Hair masks overnight. I don’t know why people do this. It’s causing friction and while it’s dry after it’s hardened in your hair, it’s causing even more friction. Leaving it on longer means having to keep it moist longer to keep it actively working. If you are going to be looking for longer hair masking time, you would need to put on a plastic cap over your mask so it doesn’t dry out.
If you wear Invisible Bead Extensions or anything other type of sew-in hand-tied weft extensions method, it’s not great for the longevity of your wefts to have them be wet for long periods of time. The wefts can swell and you can start to develop looping and they’ll need to be replaced sooner than later.
Sleeping with wet hair? For me, I’m sorry, it’s a no.
